Mrs Karen Murray - Senior Professional Officer
Karen joined NIPEC as a Senior Professional Officer in December 2016 and will be leading on a wide range of projects. Her core areas of responsibility will be in relation to Maternity, Children’s, Safeguarding and Public Health.
She qualified as RN in 1990 and held posts in Theatres and Care of the Elderly. In 1993 she qualified as a Midwife and held a number of midwifery posts in The Ulster and Downpatrick before becoming Ward Manager for Maternity outpatients in 1999. She then moved into education taking a Midwife Education Consultant post at the Beeches before moving to a Midwife Lecturers post in Queen’s University Belfast in 2002. During her 14 years at Queen’s Karen held senior posts within the Midwifery team firstly as Head of Unit for pre-registration midwifery programmes and latterly as Lead Midwife for Education (LME). Karen has had opportunities to engage in midwifery education strategically both at a national and international level. As LME she engaged with the LME Strategic reference group at the NMC. In 2005 Karen collaborated in work with the British Council, Middlesex University and the University of Technology, Jordan to help progress an undergraduate Midwifery programme and cultivate mentorship models for these students.
Karen completed a BSc (Hons) Health Sciences in 1999 before finishing an MSc in Advanced Midwifery (2002) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Health Professionals (2004). She is currently undertaking an EdD with the School of Social Science Education and Social Work, QUB.
